ADMISSION I-20

After you have been admitted to the University, they will issue a SEVIS (I-20) form, which is required to apply for or maintain an F-1 student visa from the United States Embassy in your country.

Before you can be admitted and receive the I-20 form, you are required to show that you have enough funds for your academic and living expenses for one year. In order for the Certificate of Visa Eligibility (Form I-20) to be issued, federal regulations require that you submit complete and accurate information regarding your sources of financial support. Most Universities do not award any form of need-based financial aid to international students.

Keep in mind that under normal circumstances, students holding student (F-1) visas cannot work off-campus to support themselves, either part-time during the academic year or full-time during the summer, as a means of support while at school.

Definitions of I-20 and Immigration Status

  • What is an I-20?
An I-20 is a 'Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant (F-1) Student Status for Academic and Language Students'. I-20 forms are issued by 'Designated School Officials', who are usually your International Student Coordinators. The completed form verifies that an international student has been admitted to an academic program for full-time enrollment and has shown evidence of financial support. The form is used by international students to request student visas (F-1) and student immigration status (F-1).
  • What is F-1 Immigration Status?
F-1 Immigration Status allows an individual to be engaged in full course academic study in the United States in an accredited educational program.
  • What is M-1 Immigration Status?
M-1 immigration status allows an individual to be enrolled in a vocational school or certificate program in the United States.
(For additional information on immigration status, or to make an appointment, if required, contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to apply for a visa.)
