INTERVIEW FOR F-1 VISA

After you receive an I-20 form from the school that you want to attend, follow the U.S. Embassy or Consulate's instructions to schedule an interview for your F-1 student visa.

When you apply for an F-1 visa at an American Embassy or Consulate, a consular officer will interview you. The interview usually lasts only few minutes. You will have to "prove" to the Consular Officer that you have enough ties back in your home country and will come back after finishing your academic program, or the visa will not be issued.

Here are few tips To Help You Prepare For Your Visa Interview

  • You should be honest with Consular Officer at all times. Provide correct and authentic information. If the Consular Officer believe that you are lying or have lied in a previous interview (about anything) they will probably not issue the visa.
  • The first essential step toward a successful interview is preparation. Prepare for most commonly asked questions and practice for the interview with friends.
  • Do not hesitate to politely ask to repeat or rephrase the question, if you don't understand any questions. Ask for a interpreter if you are not conversant or confident with English.
  • You need to show the Consular Officer how studying in the United States relates to your future professional career when you return home (a job offer, better job, a higher position in the company, etc ...). You must be able to clearly articulate your plan to return home at the end of your program.
  • Learn about your chosen school, explaining why you want to go to this particular school and what you hope to do with the knowledge later when you return home.
  • You may want to pay tuition to the school in advance and present the receipt to the Consular Officer.
  • Remember that your main purpose in coming to the United States should be to study, not for the chance to work before, during or after completing your U.S. education.
  • If your spouse and children are remaining behind in your country, be prepared to address how they will support themselves in your absence.
  • Be polite - Do not engage the Consular Officer in an argument - Do not ask unnecessary questions - Keep your answers to the officer's questions short and to the point - Dress up nicely and keep smiling.

What Should I Do If My F-1 Visa Application Is Denied?

If you are denied a student visa, ask the Consular Officer for a list of documents he/she would suggest you bring in order to overcome the refusal, and try to get the reason you were denied in writing.
